Well, I’m too old to be a child prodigy, maybe you’re clipping along just fine. I feel sad when I see this mentality. People beating themselves up over “falling behind” or “not keeping up”. It’s such an abstract concept. It’s one thing to want to improve and push yourself towards improvement. It’s something different when you’re chasing a state that doesn’t exist. Most artists I know push themselves to be better and feel like they’re no good / aren’t good enough. It can be such a negative cycle.

Stumbling upon a marvelous book on writing feels like being tossed into heaven for a few minutes. But it seems reading a book on writing and writing are two completely different experiences.

You see, I know writing, but I don’t know how to write a thing worth reading. Yet.
